ISM provides digital video management expertise to Barrow Neuroscience Tower project
The Barrow Neuroscience Tower project has been completed and the technologically advanced surgical facilities are up and running. The new facility, located on the Phoenix campus of St. Josephs Medical Center is a 430,000 square-foot tower housing 11 neurosurgical operating rooms, 2 endovascular procedure rooms, 64 intensive-care beds, 80 acute-care beds, 48 emergency bays, six trauma bays, three MRIs including one targeted for use during surgery. The 11 neurosurgical ORs, as well as the 2 endovascular procedure rooms utilize the most advanced digital video management technology from Image Stream Medical (ISM). ISM’s vendor neutrality enabled BNI to select the best of breed for surgical devices, diagnostic devices, booms, lighting and the like. As a result, when technology advances BNI will be able to upgrade their medical equipment to the latest and greatest. The new operating rooms are set up to eliminate the clutter of equipment often associated with the surgical theater. Equipment is mounted on moveable booms, freeing up floor space for the staff. The video signals from the boom mounted equipment is controlled and displayed through the use of Image Stream Medical’s MainStream™ OR, an advanced digital video routing system designed to make it easy for one nurse to ensure that each monitor within the OR is displaying the correct video image. With MainStream OR the charting nurse can provide each member of the surgical team with immediate access to what the surgeon is viewing or to necessary information, such as physiology monitoring, test results and MR or CT scans. MainStream OR also enables a nurse to single handedly control light levels and capture digital video and still images with a single touch of a flat panel monitor, and without leaving the charting nurses station or swapping video cables. Image Stream Medical’s LiveStream™ is connected to each MainStream OR and enables video sources from all 11 operating rooms to be viewed by any properly configured PC connected to the hospital computer network. This ability provides surgeons with the ability to check on the status of a case or to consult on a case without having to scrub in. Additionally LiveStream’s video streaming provides multiple users with simultaneous access to the video from the case, and enables the viewer to select the video source they wish to view, creating a method for teaching that provides students and colleagues unprecedented access to the cases performed at Barrow. The surgeons at Barrow are often called on to present video of difficult cases for purposes of education. With the addition of Image Stream Medical’s VaultStream™, a sophisticated digital video and image archiving and retrieval system, the surgeons at Barrow have been provided with a way to securely store and retrieve video and still images from cases. This ability enables comparative analysis of a patient’s treatment, and makes it easy for the surgeon to locate a particularly interesting case for presentation. “Providing our customers with complete solutions instead of a list of products is what sets Image Stream Medical apart”, said Image Stream Medical’s CEO Eddie Mitchell. “BNI sets a new standard for excellence in the Operating Room of the Future. BNI’s unique enterprise digital network provides unprecedented capabilities for collaboration and awareness throughout the OR, Perioperative Services and the entire BNI facility.” About ISM Image Stream Medical (ISM) designs, manufactures, and markets visualization and image management solutions for the Operating Room and special procedure clinics. Establishing a track-record of innovation, Image Stream Medical introduced the first DVD burning surgical video recorder to the surgical marketplace. Image Stream Medical’s latest generation image management device, nStream™, is designed to act as the central point of focus for image management in the surgical theater. Examples of ISM leadership and success include the installation of 42 digital operating suites and a state of the art conferencing center at the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB). Image Stream Medical takes great pride in having implemented their nStream™, VaultStream™, and LiveStream™ products at many of the most respected institutions in the world including Barrow Neurological Institute, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Johns Hopkins University, National Institute of Health, University of California San Francisco (UCSF), University of Pennsylvania, Vanderbilt University, Walter Reed Army Hospital and Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.
