The View from the Auditorium
As Dr. Erik Wilson and Dr. Eric Haas were performing simultaneous robotic surgical procedures in two adjacent operating rooms at Memorial Hermann, Image Stream broadcasted the surgeries, in High Definition, to an Auditorium of attendees at the JW Marriott Hotel.

Hermann, Image Stream broadcasted the surgeries, in High Definition, to an Auditorium of attendees at the JW Marriott Hotel. "The audio and video quality were both fantastic. Image Stream Medical far surpassed my expectations and provided an in-room experience for our entire audience," commented Dr. Erik Wilson from UT Health and Memorial Hermann Hospital. "Using Image Stream Medical, we were able to seamlessly incorporate two live surgeries into our program with incredible audio and video quality," stated Peter Herrera, Director of Surgical Education Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Using technology that is being developed in partnership with The Methodist Institute for Technology Innovation and Education (MITIE), and funded by a United States Department of Defense, Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC) grant, Image Stream is able to capture and transmit, in High Definition (HD), any operating room video signal, along with high quality audio, to the remote audience. A return video and audio feed is also provided from the auditorium to both operating rooms, creating a seamless user experience.

The universal video input capability of Image Stream's EasyLink™ router was used to capture signals from two surgical robots and two room-overview cameras in two separate operating rooms. Surgeons were outfitted with high-quality wireless audio transmitter/receiver units enabling the surgeons to introduce their staff and discuss the procedure, and then seamlessly transition to the robotic endoscopic view. During the procedure, Image Stream's EasySuite™ router provided Picture In Picture (PIP) and split views which enabled the audience to simultaneously observe the laparoscopic surgical view and the room view.

"The objective was to create a virtual presence experience for the audience, to make it feel like you were there in the operating room," said Image Stream Medical CTO Pete Renzi, "and I think we were successful."
