Medical Video Producer® (MVP)

Abstract

Image Stream Medical's digital video and image production system.

Details

MVP is Image Stream Medical's digital video and image production system that enables clinicians to easily edit digital video for presentations, and with one click integrate the video with PowerPoint. It uniquely addresses the surgeon's need for producing digital video based presentations after the surgical procedure has been recorded. This software product is a key step in eliminating the labor intensive and low quality video production workflow employed at nearly all hospitals in the world, and represents the world's first comprehensive solution for video recording and presentation.

Image Stream's MVP product possesses the following advantages:

Intuitive workflow model
In development of MVP, Image Stream first developed a prototype application and then consulted hundreds of surgeons to precisely determine the workflow involved in a surgical video presentation. The resulting product includes all features necessary for surgical video presentations without cluttered features that will never be used. Other products require users to learn the vocabulary and workflow of the video producer, with concepts like "storyboards", "layering", and "non-linear editing". Introductory training sessions for these products are typically three-day training classes. MVP has been designed for ease of use by surgeons and can be used with little or no prior training. It is surgically intuitive.

Video Reduction simplified
In order to generate a surgical presentation that includes only the critical elements of the procedure, the surgeon must extract key segments of video in a timely manner. The streamlined extraction of video clips was the primary objective of the MVP development team. Users report that there is no other product available that makes this process as simple or efficient for the surgeon.

No generational data loss
Decoding and re-encoding MPEG2 data streams is time consuming and generates some level of data loss in each editing session. In addition, the encoding process requires significant processing power on the editing workstation. MVP edits MPEG2 videos without decoding and re-encoding the data, and original quality is maintained.

Integrated video project management
MVP automatically creates a project folder for the user and stores all video clips, still images and presentations in this folder. This critical file management step is essential for surgeons not familiar with computer file management since a common mistake made by surgeons is to forget to copy the video files when moving a presentation to CD. By having integrated file management, MVP avoids this common end-user mistake.

Import directly to PowerPoint
The import to PowerPoint button automatically launches PowerPoint, creates a presentation and inserts all videos and stills for the current project into that presentation. Videos inserted into PowerPoint by MVP include start/stop/pause video controls. Video controls are not included when the user relies on the standard insert movie from file command provided in PowerPoint. Since the tedious and error fraught video insertion and management duties have been automated, the surgeon can focus on the presentation contents.

XML metadata media asset management interface
As the user is editing video, MVP automatically creates XML metadata that describes the project including all video clips and still images. This metadata layer is critical for institutions requiring database integration with the video content.

Export project to CD
This feature allows the user to transfer all of the video and presentation files to a CD for distribution to a colleague, referrer, or for presentation at a conference. When the CD is inserted into a CD reader, an unpacking utility is automatically launched that walks the user through the process of transferring all video and presentation files to the hard disk for review or editing.

Network access of video files
This feature allows the user to edit videos directly from the file server without the use of a CD or DVD. The original source video is not altered during the editing process as a copy is extracted from the original and written into the editing project folder
