Large Scale Production
Environment
University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB)
Birmingham,
AL
Challenge
The University of Alabama (UAB) Medical Center was
looking for a partner that was able to provide a vendor neutral video management
and visualization solution for a massive 42 room new construction project, the
UAB North Pavilion. Key selection criteria included a focused competency in
visualization, the ability to provide a friendly user experience with a short
learning curve, a highly responsive service and support capability and the
ability to deliver an enterprise solution for the largest integration project
attempted in the United States.
Key requirements of this project included:
-Video
routing and control in the OR
-OR to OR; conferencing on demand
-OR to
physician desktop; live video on demand
-OR to conference room; broadcasting
on demand.
Solution
Image Stream Medical (ISM) was able to deliver a solution
that either met or exceeded the expectations of UAB in all areas. One example of
exceeding expectations is seen in the custom VideoWall. This unique centralized
viewing console allows the staff to have an immediate overview of all 42
procedure rooms from a single location.
This VideoWall has proven to be
extremely valuable in improving room turnover and overall awareness of activity
in the OR’s.
Image Stream Medical worked extensively with the training staff
to simplify user interaction with the systems and to develop comprehensive
training programs. This resulted in a shortened learning curve for this major
hospital transition.
Installation Details
Image Stream Medical installed MainStream™ OR systems
into 42 operating rooms at UAB. The LiveStream™ system was implemented to
provide OR to OR video linking and OR to desktop viewing. Several ancillary
conference rooms and board rooms were linked into the LiveStream video network
along with external video conferencing capabilities. The VideoWall solutions
designed and installed by ISM have become the centerpiece of the new operating
theater for near instantaneous status monitoring of all ORs. Every operating
room has the ability to generate high-quality video documentation of surgical
procedures using the DVR-MD recorder product.
Program Update
Image Stream Medical facilitated a smooth transition of
the new UAB North Pavilion to production status in September of 2004. The
hospital has been successfully operating for 23 months. Image Stream
continues to provide support to UAB through a local field engineering presence.
UAB is an extremely satisfied customer as evidenced by the follow-on work
in various areas of the hospital that has been continuous since the
commissioning of this new facility.
Academic Teaching Environment
Barrow Neurological Institute
Phoenix, AZ
Challenge
Image Stream Medical began working with The Barrow Neurological Institute in
October of 2004, ISM installed a digital video recording network as a special
project to record and manage 10 rooms of neurosurgical video.
In March of 2005, BNI approached ISM with a request to provide an innovative
and productivity enhancing integrated control solution for their 11 new
operating rooms and 2 EndoVascular suites. Key requirements for this project
included a competency in video and image management, the ability to create
online teaching files, and the ability to provide real-time visualization of the
OR from remote locations. The BNI is also acutely interested in working with
innovative companies that value customer ideas and feedback.
Solution
Image Stream Medical has designed a solution that addresses the unique needs
of BNI. In each OR, staff will have complete touch panel control over video,
lighting, audio, XM radio and hands free telephony. Video documentation from
each operating room will flow into a central storage location, where it can be
easily processed and stored into custom teaching files. Physicians and staff
will have complete remote OR visualization capability, including a nursing video
wall for monitoring the status of all ORs.
Installation Details
The next generation BNI solution consists of 13 MainStream™ OR systems with
complete touch panel room control. Operating Rooms, Offices, Conference rooms
and a VideoWall are all linked through the LiveStream digital video
streaming network, providing remote visualization of OR activities. An
integrated nStream™ recorder in each operating room captures
DualStream video and sends it to the VaultStream™ server for storage in a
temporary clinical library. Physicians are provided with the ability to use ISM
tools such as the new nStream Production Mode to easily access, edit and produce
online teaching files and presentations.
Program Update
In Image Stream’s initial implementation of October 2004, we worked closely
with the staff of the BNI to develop the original networked image management
solution. This enabled the BNI staff to transition from using their
labor-intensive DV tape recording processes to an efficient network-based
workflow process.
BNI moved into the new facility and began procedures in July 2006.

Environment
Vanderbilt Voice Center
Nashville, TN
Challenge
The Vanderbilt Voice Center was looking for a partner that would allow them
to move beyond the limitations being imposed by the legacy equipment they had
been using. Image Stream Medical was asked to design a clinical video and
data management solution that could address the specific needs of a high volume
Stroboscopy clinic. This included the need to easily capture high quality video
and audio, the ability to extract still images from recorded video, to print
reports, and to quickly and easily access historical information. Furthermore,
the solution needed to offer enough flexibility so that physicians could consult
with patients, while reviewing video from locations other than the Stroboscopy
examination rooms.
Solution
Image Stream Medical worked closely with the staff of the Vanderbilt Voice
Center to understand their workflow needs and develop an initial set of
requirements. Image Stream Medical then developed and evolved the nStream
product over a period of 2 years, continuously taking feedback and improving the
product. The networked solution allowed Speech Language Pathologists to perform
stroboscopy recordings and historical reviews with a patient in an exam room.
Doctors were then able to access this information and review it with the patient
from a different location. This allowed Vanderbilt to double
the throughput of their stroboscopy practice.
Installation Details
Image Stream Medical delivered and installed four nStream™ digital
video document management systems and an enterprise VaultStream™ server.
Archiving procedures is also enabled with this solution. ISM also provided
networked review stations to facilitate the improved workflow of moving patients
out of the exam room for consultation with the physician. Physicians now use the
browser-based Video Information Portal™ (VIP) to remotely access content. They
also use Medical Video Producer™ (MVP) to edit video and create PowerPoint
presentations.
Program Update
Vanderbilt has been using the nStream™ and VaultStream™ network products for
approximately 2 years. The first day procedures were performed with the nStream
system, Vanderbilt was able to double their patient throughput. Image Stream and
Vanderbilt enjoy an excellent relationship and developmental partnership.
